Baltic Council resolves environment issue

22.06.2004

The fifth Baltic Sea States Summit took place on June 21 2004 at the invitation of the prime minister of Estonia. The presidency of the European Union and a member of the European Commission participated, as did the heads of government and representatives of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia and Sweden.

The members of the summit agreed that, in connection with the resolutions of the International Maritime Organization, the transportation of fuel oil in single-hull tankers in the Baltic Sea must end by April 5 2005.

The members also underlined the importance of continued joint efforts in combating organized crime, international terrorism and illegal migration.

After the summit Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov told reporters that thanks to its membership of the council, Russia is in a position to seize greater opportunities regarding the North European gas pipeline project, the Baltic Energy Circle and a number of other transport projects.
